Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

VDI combines the benefits of cloud hosting with the security and management tools that IT administrators are looking for. Learn about the benefits of streamlined application deployment and reduced hardware and labor costs associated with maintaining traditional workstations.

VPLS offers VDI to advance your company

In the current age of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), users will be able to access their Virtual Desktops using their existing PCs, Macs, tablets, or phones. Not only does it allow the user to easily switch between operating environments, but it also eliminates the need to upgrade your workstation.

VDI also makes workstation deployments simpler since every attached workstation will be able to utilize the same image which will reduce administrative and support costs in the long run. Furthermore, this feature is convenient when one of your computers malfunctions since you will be able to access user data and applications at any other workstation. Also, instead of upgrading all of your office’s individual workstations, you can opt to purchase Thin Clients or Zero Clients that have no spinning disks and have a longer lifespan than traditional workstations.

VPLS offers two types of VDI services in the forms of on-premise VDI and cloud-hosted VDI commonly known as Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS). Our deployment of DaaS, however, is unique from other service providers in that we deploy the same technology as an on-premise solution in a private cloud environment dedicated for the customer. This increases the security for our cloud-hosted VDI deployments and allows IT administrators greater control and visibility. We also recommend utilizing Nimble Storage for on-premise VDI deployments to achieve high IOPS and fast performance. VPLS primarily uses Nimble Storage arrays for all of our workloads.

Performance

On-Premise VDI

If the majority of your users will be connecting from inside the office along with utilizing graphics or even memory intensive applications, then on-premise VDI is the way to go. If you have limited Internet bandwidth, servicing your remote or branch office VDI users will be challenging and will adversely affect performance.

Cloud-Hosted VDI

If your workforce is distributed across multiple sites and offices, then cloud-hosted VDI offers better performance as workloads that can be distributed across data centers that are geographically preferential for users.

Security & Control

Securing an on-premise or cloud-hosted VDI deployment is very similar to users accessing their desktops over SSL and VPN with 2-factor authentication. Endpoints can be restricted so that no local USB interfaces can be accessed.

Scalability

On-Premise VDI

Due to fixed resources, there is limited scalability without incurring additional capital expenditures.

Cloud-Hosted VDI

Desktops can be sized up for performance and scaled horizontally to support your growing user base without incurring high capital expenditures.

Cost

On-Premise VDI

High capital expenditure for software and hardware.

Cloud-Hosted VDI

Operational expenditure per desktop based subscription.
